Teaching My Children to Stand Up for Themselves

Most adults have a difficult time accepting the reality of bullying, especially when their children are on the receiving end of it. We want our children to be able to stand up for themselves, but don’t exactly know how to teach them how to do that.

As a Preschool in El Monte, CA, we understand the struggles you are facing and would like to help you by offering you these tips.

  • Talk to them About Friendship

It’s important that your child understands that friends neither hurt each other nor give each other a hard time. This can help him or her properly distinguish which peer groups he or she ought to be part of.

  • Teach Them How to Be Assertive

Being assertive isn’t being mean — it’s standing up for ourselves and our beliefs. The earlier you teach your child this, the better he will understand. Some simple way your child can start practicing assertiveness:

    • Teach them to say ‘no’ to things that make them uncomfortable.
    • Encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings.
  • Be Careful with Your Actions

We understand that as parents you will naturally feel a strong need to defend your little one. However, it’s important that you don’t encourage violence or negative talk. These things can only make matters worse. Instead, you want to teach your child how to reach absolution peacefully.

As a Chinese School in Arcadia, we believe that a love for learning is best fostered in a safe and peaceful setting. Therefore, we make sure to take extra effort in making TomorrowLand Academy the haven that children need to achieve proper growth and development.
